The Precipice (2025)

Album art by Carolina Knights

Eliza Rhinelander released her first full album, The Precipice, on February 5, 2025. Written at the ages of 17 and 18, during her final year of high school and her first year of university, the songs chronicle life on the cusp of adulthood: staying up all night, saying goodbyes, forming deep connections with people, severing them, wanting to run away, wanting to stay…

Another collaboration with her friend and producer Silas Bonnell, The Precipice defies genre categorization, exploring elements of folk, rock, indie, pop, and bluegrass/Americana, pairing fiddle with electric guitar, and one song featuring an organ.

With inspirations ranging from 17th century French novels, to horror movies, to her own life, the album is a coming-of-age story. Rhinelander captures the experience of the in-between feeling of adolescence, examining the possibilities ahead of you and deciding the person you want to be and the life you want to live. A “precipice” is a dizzying moment of consideration, a moment of living in uncertainty and possibility before you take the leap and make your choice.

“The Precipice is a solid debut that shows off some impressive songwriting chops—and a clear voice, too… [I]t’s the kind of record that feels like warm sunshine on a winter morning”

[Massachusetts] is a great song—catchy and effortless, like an early-career Taylor Swift, if the country singer-turned-pop star had grown up in the salt-tinged Maritimes instead of woodsy Pennsylvania.

Good Old Days (2024)

Album art by Caralina Knights.

Eliza Rhinelander's first offering to the world is her debut EP Good Old Days, released May 22, 2024. Consisting of songs written when she was 15 and 16, the project is an exploration of myth and memory, of looking to and living in the past. Produced by her friend Silas Bonnell at his home studio in Dartmouth, NS, the stripped back, folk driven recording highlights Rhinelander’s intricate lyrics, presenting her first and foremost as a storyteller. Whether inspired by her own experiences or those of others, her lyrics have a cutting honesty, mixing poetry with conversation. From decades-old newspaper articles to ancient mythology to old houses, listening to Good Old Days paints a picture of the passing of time and the feelings that accompany it. Good Old Days was crowdfunded on Kickstarter and Eliza is forever grateful for the support of everyone who helped make it happen.

“[Eliza Rhinelander's] simple yet sweet accoustic sound with romance-focused storytelling is finely crafted. She is yet another standout folk artist in Halifax with a sound that could rival Taylor Swift's own attempts at folk.”
Brendyn Creamer, The Coast

“At a shade over 22 minutes long, [Good Old Days] is a breezy listen and brimming with potential. Rhinelander has a clear voice and an ear for storytelling.”
Martin Bauman, The Coast

Scores

As You Like It (2025)

Shakespeare’s As You Like It: The Walkabout Experience is a joyful, music-filled adventure through Point Pleasant Park, reviving a beloved SBTS tradition of moving audiences through the Park alongside the play, immersing them in the magic of live theatre in nature and discovering new scenes around every bend.

The production features an all-new original score by local singer/songwriter Eliza Rhinelander (Merritt Award nominee for Outstanding Original Score – Twelfth Night 2024), performed live by beloved Halifax Musician Ian Sherwood (ECMA winner, multiple Music Nova Scotia Award nominations) as Rosalind’s banished father.

Music is an essential ingredient of this play: I'm thrilled to continue Shakespeare  by the Sea's collaboration with composer Eliza Rhinelander, one of Halifax's fastest-rising musical talents, and to welcome two-time Nova Scotia musician of the year Ian Sherwood to our acting company to bring this magical score to life. I am in awe of their talents. ~Drew Douris-O'Hara, Director of As You Like It

Twelfth Night (2024)

Eliza’s first time composing professionally was for Shakespeare by the Sea’s 2024 production of Twelfth Night, which ran from July 19-August 30, 2024. Directed by Drew Douris-O’Hara and Music Directed by Shanoa Phillips, this production was set in a 1920s vaudeville theatre inspired by historical queer and trans performers. Feste the jester, played the immensely talented Zach Colangelo, became a sort of MC, lending her beautiful voice to a jazzy, bluesy score. In writing the music, Rhinelander started with the lyrics Shakespeare supplied, but also mined traditional folk ballads and sea shanties for songs and stories about characters who defy gender norms, and listened to 20s jazz and blues aplenty. The score was performed a capella, with the cast’s voices backing up Colangelo’s lead vocals. The Opening and Closing numbers were performed fully live, while for all 10 songs throughout the play, the backup vocals, recorded by the cast, played on a record player/gramophone setup that Colangelo sang along to. The music was specifically written for Colangelo’s incredibly beautiful, unique voice and extensive range, and the lyrics were written to be sung by a trans woman. That being said, if you are interested in using this music for your own production, you can email Eliza through the “Contact” page of this website. She is open to discussions about adapting the music for different voices.

“[A] fun and funny, passionate production steeped in Nova Scotia singer-songwriter Eliza Rhinelander's original tunes as atmospheric as foggy coasts or smoke-filled, 1920s Paris bars… [t]he songs by Rhinelander, at 19 and at the beginning of her career, are amazing, from the beginning shipwreck storytelling sea shanty to bluesy heartbreak love songs.”
Elissa Barnard, NS Reviews Blog

“Eliza Rhinelander's music is glorious. The recurring motif throughout the show is a sea shanty if it were penned by one of the Gershwins.”
Amanda Campbell, TWISI Theatre Blog

As You Like It (2024)

Cast of As You Like It
Photos by Maddy Thompson

In her first year of university, Rhinelander adapted, directed, and composed music for her very own production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It with the Dal Theatre Society. The production ran from April 18-20, 2024 at the Park Place Theatre to rave reviews, with audiences laughing, crying, singing and dancing along. Of the 10 person cast, 5 played instruments, and the band of guitar, fiddle, mandolin, ukulele, and cajon allowed for rollicking folk arrangements and layered harmonies. Eliza adapted this score to teach the Teen Company at the Studio at Shakespeare by the Sea in their 2025 production of As You Like It. If you are interested in using this music for your own production, you can email Eliza through the “Contact” page of this website.
